Old Testament
The first five books of the Old Testament are called the Pentateuch. These five books were given by God to Moses. These five books are called the Torah or Law by Israel. These first five books and oral tradition were an integral part of Hebrew life. There are 46 books in the Catholic Bible. The Protestant Bible only has 39 books, because some of the books were not included in the Hebrew Canon because they were written in Greek. The 7 books, also known as the Apocrypha, are Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch and Maccabees I and II.
New Testament
The New Testament was originally called the Gospel and Apostolic Writings. Gospel means "Good News". There are 27 Books, with eight writers. Six of the writers were Apostles of Jesus: Matthew, John, Paul, James, Peter and Jude. There were two that were the immediate disciples of Jesus, Mark and Luke. The Gospels relate to the life and personal teaching of Jesus. Three of the Gospels are called synoptic, Matthew, Mark and Luke because their narratives are parallel. The book of John completes the three and was written after the three synoptic Gospels. Paul wrote most of the other books in the New Testament which were letters to the newly developing churches.
There are 2 other books that are not letters or Gospels and they are Acts, commonly known as Acts of the Apostles written by Luke and Revelation the apocalyptic writing believed to be written by the Apostle John although the true author remains anonymous.
