Today is the feast day of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the society of Jesus. St. Ignatius was born in 1491 of minor nobility in norther Spain. He served in the Spanish military and was wounded in battle with the French. While recovering he read of the saints and truly found God and achieved a great enlightenment which led him to leave his life of comfort and seek a life of poverty and service.
He wrote the a book, Spiritual Exercises, which is the basis of many different spiritual practices used today and one of the greatest spiritual books ever written. He then founded the Jesuits, Jesus, the Savior of Mankind (IHS) the same order that our Pope Francis belongs to.
Today Pope Francis celebrated this Feast day in a private mass.
