Advent is from the Latin word adventus meaning "coming". Advent is a time of preparation for the nativity of Jesus. It is also the beginning of the liturgical year. The first day of Advent is Sunday, December 1. The color purple is a color of royalty and also a color of penitence. It is not the same penitential period of Lent, but instead a time of prayerful and joyful preparation.
