The parable of the prodigal son was told by Jesus because Jesus was being accused of spending time with tax collectors and sinners. Jesus didn't see tax collectors or sinners. He saw people who were broken and separated from God. He came to help these people see the Glory of the Father and to receive the grace of God. Why is it so difficult for us to see with his eyes. When we see an addict, a homeless person, a prostitute, we see with our eyes instead of the eyes of God. On this day of Lent, let us look beyond the surface and find compassion for those people that society deems unworthy of love. They have been tossed aside, unwanted, unloved and forgotten by humanity, but never from God.
